Reporting Crimes and Emergencies

All crimes and emergencies should be promptly and accurately reported to the Boston University Police Department. Telephone stickers with the emergency number are distributed to residences and to faculty and staff offices. This information is also printed on the back of all Terrier ID cards. The Boston University Police Department responds to all emergencies and crimes on campus. Police emergency number: 617-353-2121

Policy on Reporting Criminal Incidents to State and Local Police

Boston University files its crime index reports with the FBI and the Massachusetts Department of Public Safety, as well as with the Department of Education as required by federal law. Safety information, including crime statistics, are provided annually to students and employees. Copies of the Safety on Campus Report are available from the Boston University Police Department upon request. We communicate regularly with area police agencies. The Boston University Police Department has direct radio and telephone hotline communication with all neighboring law enforcement agencies and is connected via computer to the state and federal law enforcement information systems.

If you request assistance, staff at Residence Life, Human Resources, or the Dean of Students office will assist you in contacting the appropriate local police department, or the Boston University Police Department if the crime occurs on campus. Crimes may be reported to any of these resources on a voluntary and confidential basis.

Access to University Facilities

Boston University is private property. The Trustees reserve the right to grant or restrict access to any or all of its grounds, facilities, and programs.

Access to Residences

The safety of students living in University residences is a preeminent concern of Boston University. The University has a guest and visitor policy for all residences. Specific policy information is available online at www.bu.edu/lifebook, at residence staff offices, or at Residence Life. All large residences have twenty-four-hour security while school is in session. Small residences have twenty-four-hour lock and key protection.

Maintenance of Campus Facilities and Grounds

Facilities Management and Planning maintains the University’s buildings and grounds in a safe condition. Indoor and outdoor lighting is regularly checked and repaired. Lock changes and repairs may be requested through the residence staff or building superintendent.

The Chief of Police and Executive Director of Public Safety for Boston University reports directly to the Vice President for Administrative Services (617-353-6500).
