Dr. Villanueva is a widely published writer who received the American Book Award for book of poems, Scene from the Movie GIANT (1993). He teaches intermediate and advanced Spanish, including language through literature courses and Spanish for Native Speakers. His published work includes poetry, books, articles, and reviews. His most recent book of poems,  So Spoke Penelope has been published in English by Grolier Poetry Press (2013) and in a bilingual edition (Así habló Penélope) by the University of Alcalá de Henares (2014). His work has been included in the Norton Anthology of Latino Literature, and he frequently lectures, gives readings, and has offered classes in the U.S. and abroad.

His books also include Scenes from the Movie GIANT; Chronicle of My Worst Years; Shaking Off the Dark; Chicanos: Antología histórica y literaria; and Primera causa/First Cause.
