Maria did both her BA and her MA degrees in Spanish at San Diego State University. After immigrating to the United States from Mexico at a young age, she became interested in her cultural roots, which led her to study works with themes related to indigenous cultures. She is also interested in Peninsular and Latin American Literature of the 19th- and 20th-centuries, from a Transatlantic perspective.
