Submarine Officer (Engineering Duty)

Requirements

The minimum requirement is a Baccalaureate Degree in Engineering or Physical Science. Evidence of academic excellence is required. In general, applicants must have a GPA of 3.0 or above and rank in the top 25% of the graduating class. Candidates must meet all Submarine Officer selection criteria.

Job Description

Between the Division Officer and Department Head tours, Submarine ED Option candidates will be required to complete a Master’s Degree in a technical major approved by the EDO community. Upon completing a Department Head tour on a submarine, the officer will have the opportunity to apply for transition to the ED community. Conversion to the Restricted Line community will be at the option of the ED community and the candidate. Officers may decide to remain in the Unrestricted Line through their entire career at no penalty. Submarine Officer (ED Option) candidates may terminate their participation in the Submarine (ED Option) program at any time prior to redesignation as 146X.

Obligation

Active duty obligation for NROTC graduates not exercising ED Option is 4 years. An additional year of active duty obligation is incurred due to naval nuclear propulsion training IAW MILPERSMAN 1520-050.

Upon redesignation to 146X, officers incure a minimum service obligation of 2 years from date of designator change to be served concurrently with any other obligations.
