Agent Information Sheets

The Office of Research Compliance (ORC) has identified a list of biological agents approved for use within the Boston University/Boston Medical Center research community that have the potential to cause laboratory acquired infection (LAI). While LAI is a rare event, the research community continues to take proactive measures to further mitigate risk to researchers, safety personnel and medical providers.

ROHP has worked together with the Office of Research Safety to prepare individual information sheets focused on laboratory safety for each of the biological agents with the potential to cause laboratory acquired infection (LAI). The sheets contain agent specific information on safety and handling precautions, transmission and symptoms, medical contact information and immediate steps to take in the event of an exposure.

These agent specific sheets will be reviewed with and issued to each PI and researcher as part of ROHP’s medical clearance process in support of the IBC’s protocol review and approval involving these biological agents.

The first phase introduction of these agent information sheets includes the agents below with the remainder of the agents to be added over the next few months:

Chlamydia trachomatis

Francisella tularensis

Herpes B virus non-human primates

Mycobacterium bovis

Mycobacterium tuberculosis

Neisseria gonorrhea

Neisseria meningitidis

Rabies virus

Vaccinia
