ChRIS Code Lab
Expand the reach of your image processing software

Join researchers and software developers from Boston Children’s Hospital, Red Hat, Boston University, and the Massachusetts Open Cloud (MOC) at the first ever ChRIS Code Lab and expand the reach of your image-processing software for deployment onto the ChRIS imaging platform.
This free, 2-day event will include:
- A guided workshop where you’ll learn how to build your image processing software into a containerized ChRIS plugin
- Lab sessions where you’ll build, test, and demo your new ChRIS plugin
- Free lunch
- Swag
The Code Lab will be held from 10 AM – 4 PM on both Tuesday, March 27 and Wednesday, March 28 at Red Hat’s beautiful new Open Innovation Lab space at 300 A Street in the Fort Point neighborhood of South Boston (Directions.)
About ChRIS
ChRIS (ChRIS Research Integration Service) is a cloud-based platform developed as part of a collaborative effort between Boston Children’s Hospital, Red Hat, Boston University, and the Massachusetts Open Cloud (MOC). The platform began as a project to facilitate the organization, 3D visualization, and collaboration around medical imaging amongst researchers; it has evolved into an open source platform with the potential to democratize the development of image processing software within an ecosystem following common standards, rather than disparate silos, and powered by Red Hat’s OpenShift and OpenStack in the MOC.
ChRIS plugins are standardized via containers, because containers enable easy creation of portable image processing software that includes everything it needs to run in a lightweight and recreatable environment.

Agenda
Day 1
- 10 AM – 10:30 AM: Welcome & Introductions (30 min)
- 10:30 AM – 12 PM: Workshop – Intro to Writing ChRIS Plug-ins (1.5 hr)
- 12 PM – 1 PM: Lunch Courtesy Red Hat, Inc. (1 hr)
- 1 PM – 4 PM: Hacking (3 hr)
Day 2
- 10 AM – 12 PM: Hacking (2 hr)
- 12 PM – 1 PM: Lunch Courtesy Red Hat, Inc. (1 hr)
- 1 PM – 2 PM: Hacking (1 hr)
- 2 PM – 4 PM: Demos (2 hr)
Preparing for the Code Lab
A little bit of planning ahead will maximize your productivity during this event! Here are our recommended prerequisites for this event:
- A laptop (8 GB RAM recommended; should be capable of running Docker and your image processing software)
- Docker (Visit this tutorial on how to set it up.)
- Either a piece of pre-existing image processing software you would like to convert into a ChRIS plugin, or an idea of the type of image processing plugin you’d like to build for the ChRIS platform.
- Sample imaging data that best demonstrates the type of image processing you intend to do.
