Area Directors

The resident assistant (RA) is an Office of Residence Life student staff member living on a floor or within a residence area who works with residents in that living area. Resident assistants are selected for their concern for fellow students, their leadership skills and their willingness to meet the challenges and expectations of the position to the best of their abilities. Resident assistants are trained to provide support and assistance to students on a variety of issues.

As student staff members, resident assistants play a unique role in guiding, encouraging, directing, and helping other students as they learn and test new ideas, seek satisfying career choices, clarify their personal and societal values, and become contributing adult members of a larger community. The resident assistant serves as a role model, as a peer advisor, as a resource and referral agent, and as a friend to students. In these roles, the resident assistant is an extension of the provision of services and sphere of influence of full-time staff.

The resident assistant is a part-time staff member of the Office of Residence Life, a division of the Office of the Dean of Students, and is responsible for actively working twenty hours each week towards achieving the goals of the Office of Residence Life.

A resident assistant is a full-time junior, senior, or graduate student, whose cumulative grade point average (GPA) is at least 2.70, and is in good University disciplinary and financial standing (please refer to the Applicant Information section for further details). The resident assistant is recognized as a student leader and role model who is accountable to full-time professional staff of the Office of Residence Life and the Office of the Dean of Students.

Senior resident assistants are graduate students who serve in a “senior staff” role where they assist the Residence Hall Director/Assistant Area Director or the Area Director in the supervision of the resident assistant staff.
