The six Area Directors are full-time professional staff members who supervise the day-to-day operation of each of the residential areas. These individuals provide direct supervision to the Residence Hall Directors/Assistant Area Directors and indirect supervision to the resident assistant (RA)/senior resident assistant (SRA) staff in the area. Area Directors also supervise the administrative secretarial staff in each of the areas. They serve as student conduct hearing officers and meet with students one on one who have allegedly violated the Boston University "Code of Student Responsibilities." They work in collaboration with various offices on campus to provide service to students as well as offer referrals to students for other services. The Area Directors serve on a variety of committees that impact the direction of the Office of Residence Life.
Area Directors live on campus, and you may very well see them taking meals in the dining halls with other staff members, students, or even their families. They serve in the Office of Residence Life on-call system and provide support to the Resident Assistant (RA) and “senior staff” on-call tiers. They also are visible at on-campus events and are often called on to serve as student organization advisors and “chaperones” to events and off campus trips.
Why should you contact your Area Director? The Area Director can be contacted if you have a question or concern about quality of life issues in your room/residence, or if you would like information about getting involved at Boston University or within your residential area. In some cases, the Area Director serves as the advisor or co-advisor to the Residence Hall Association (hall government), and would be a great resource if you are interested in getting involved in this program. Also, if your Residence Hall Director or Assistant Area Director is unavailable, the Area Director is another professional who is available to assist you.
