Elaine Alpert (Social and Behavioral Sciences) received the Massachusetts Medical Society's Henry Ingersoll Bowditch Award for Excellence in Public Health. For several decades, she has been at the vanguard of the movement to train medical professionals in identifying and asking patients about family violence. She is the author of Partner Violence: How to Recognize and Treat Victims of Abuse, now in its fourth edition.

Allison Blakely (History) was elected president of Phi Beta Kappa, the nation's oldest academic honor society, in recognition of his service and his lifelong work advancing the society's goal of excellence in the liberal arts and sciences. A member since 1962, Blakely will lead Phi Beta Kappa for a three-year term.

Paula Friedman (Geriatric Dentistry) was named a fellow of the Pierre Fauchard Academy, an international organization that recognizes outstanding work in dentistry, for her contributions to the profession. Friedman is a former president of the American Dental Education Association and is one of three professors in the Goldman School of Dental Medicine who have been invited to join the Fauchard Academy.

Maurice Lee (English) was awarded a Charles A. Ryskamp Research Fellowship from the American Council of Learned Societies. The fellowship, designed to help junior faculty advance their research, will allow Lee to explore how changing notions of chance in the 19th century influenced American literature and to situate the works of writers such as Herman Melville, Emily Dickinson, and Henry David Thoreau within the shifting cultural and philosophical landscape at that time.

Bahaa Saleh (Electrical and Computer Engineering) received the 2006 Kuwait Prize in Basic Sciences from the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences. The award recognizes Saleh's contributions to the field of optical science, including his extensive research in squeezed and entangled light.

Abu Abdullah (International Health) was named a Fellow of the Faculty of Public Health by the Royal College of Physicians and received an Outstanding Health Promotion Project Award from the government of Hong Kong.

Sachiko Akiyama (Visual Arts) received the Joan Mitchell Award and an Artist Resource Trust Grant.

Lynne Allen (Visual Arts) received a Whiting Foundation Award.

George Annas (Health Law) was awarded the Pellegrino Medal in Bioethics from Samford University.

Theodore Antoniou (Music) was awarded the distinction of Commander of the Order of Honor, Greece.

Caroline Apovian (Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Nutrition) received the American Society of Clinical Nutrition's Physician Nutritionist Specialist Award.

Emily Barman (Sociology) was awarded the Association of Fundraising Professionals' Skystone Ryan Research Prize for her book Contesting Communities.

Ethan Baxter (Earth Sciences) was honored with the F. W. Clarke Medal of the Geochemical Society.

Jeffrey F. Beatty (Strategy and Policy) won the Boston University Metcalf Cup and Prize for Excellence in Teaching.

Laurence Beck (Nephrology) received a Junior Faculty Award from Amgen.

John Bernardo (Pulmonary Center) received the Massachusetts Thoracic Society's Henry D. Chadwick Medal.

Azer Bestavros (Computer Science) was elected chair of the Technical Committee on the Internet for the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers Communications Society.

Shalender Bhasin (Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Nutrition) was listed as one of the Best Doctors in Boston by the National Guidelines Committee.

Jag Bhawan (Dermatology) received the Walter R. Nickel Award for Excellence in Teaching from the American Society of Dermatopathology.

Gregory Binus (Psychiatry) received the Exemplary Psychiatrist Award from the National Association for the Mentally Ill and the American Psychiatry Association.

Penelope Bitzas (Music) and Eric P. Widmaier (Biology) received the Boston University Metcalf Award for Excellence in Teaching.

Brooke Blower (History), Sucharita Chandran (Marketing), John Connor (Microbiology), and Marah Curtis (Social Welfare Policy) were awarded Peter Paul Career Development Professorships.

Zvi Bodie (Finance and Economics) was named the Norman and Adele Barron Professor in Management.

Donald Booth (Oral Surgery) was inducted into the Royal College of Surgeons.

Steven Borkan (Nephrology) received the Massachusetts Medical Society's Grant V. Rodkey Award for outstanding contributions to medical education.

Lewis Braverman (Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Nutrition) received the Endocrine Society's Robert Williams Distinguished Service Award.

Frederic Brunel (Marketing), Jonathan Hibbard (Marketing), and Peter Russo (Strategy and Policy) each received the Award for Excellence in Entrepreneurship Teaching and Pedagogical Innovation from the National Consortium of Entrepreneurship Centers.

James Burns (Danielsen Institute) was honored with the Early Career Psychologist Award from the National Register of Health Service Psychologists and the American Psychological Association.

William Carroll (English) and James Winn (English) received Fellowships from the American Council of Learned Societies.

Christos Cassandras (Manufacturing Engineering) and David Castañón (Electrical and Computer Engineering) were named Distinguished Members of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers Control Systems Society.

Suzanne Chapin (Curriculum and Teaching) received the 2006 Award for Exemplary Curriculum in Mathematics for Gifted and Talented Students from the National Association for Gifted Children.

Aram V. Chobanian (Medicine) and Ha Jin (Creative Writing) were elected members of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Cutler Cleveland (Geography and Environment) received the Adelman/Frankel Award from the United States Association for Energy Economics.

Alan S. Cohen (School of Medicine) was recognized with an outstanding achievement award at the International Symposium on Amyloidosis.

Theodore Colton (Epidemiology) was selected by the American Public Health Association to deliver the 2006 Lowell Reed Lecture.

Wendy Coster (Occupational Therapy and Rehabilitation Counseling) received the Eleanor Clarke Slagle Lectureship Award from the American Occupational Therapy Association.

Ralph D'Agostino (Mathematics and Statistics) was named the Remington Lecturer by the American Heart Association.

Carlo De Luca (NeuroMuscular Research Center) and his company, Delsys, received a Tibbetts Award from the Small Business Administration.

Isabel Dominguez (Hematology/Oncology); Haralambos Gavras (Hypertension); Albena Halpert, Brian Jacobson, Robert Lowe, Satish Singh, Diane Song, and Michael Wolfe (all of Gastroenterology); and Yuqing Zhang (Epidemiology) were named members of the National Guidelines Committee.

Thomas Einhorn (Orthopedics) received the Dr. Marian Ropes Award for Excellence from the Massachusetts Arthritis Association.

Sean Elliott (Chemistry), Emanuel Katz (Physics), Christopher Passaglia (Biomedical Engineering), Leonid Reyzin (Computer Science), Joshua Semeter (Electrical and Computer Engineering), and Joan Walker (Geography and Environment) each received a National Science Foundation Career Award. Emanuel Katz also received a Sloan Fellowship and Leonid Reyzin was named a Fellow of the Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics.

Terry Everson (Music) led the BU Trumpet Ensemble to second place in the 2007 National Trumpet Competition.

Fred Foulkes (Organizational Behavior) received the American Compensation Committee's Lifetime Achievement Award.

Alan Geller (Dermatology) received the Environmental Protection Agency's Stratospheric Ozone Protection Award.

Barbara Gilchrest (Dermatology) was awarded the Stephen Rothman Medal by the Society for Dermatologic Investigation.

Michael Grodin (Health Law) delivered the Cabot Lecture at Harvard Medical School as well as the University Holocaust Lecture and Dean's Lecture at Vanderbilt University.
