photo of AlpertElaine Alpert (Social and Behavioral Sciences) received the Massachusetts Medical Society's Henry Ingersoll Bowditch Award for Excellence in Public Health. For several decades, she has been at the vanguard of the movement to train medical professionals in identifying and asking patients about family violence. She is the author of Partner Violence: How to Recognize and Treat Victims of Abuse, now in its fourth edition.

photo of BlakelyAllison Blakely (History) was elected president of Phi Beta Kappa, the nation's oldest academic honor society, in recognition of his service and his lifelong work advancing the society's goal of excellence in the liberal arts and sciences. A member since 1962, Blakely will lead Phi Beta Kappa for a three-year term.

photo of FriedmanPaula Friedman (Geriatric Dentistry) was named a fellow of the Pierre Fauchard Academy, an international organization that recognizes outstanding work in dentistry, for her contributions to the profession. Friedman is a former president of the American Dental Education Association and is one of three professors in the Goldman School of Dental Medicine who have been invited to join the Fauchard Academy.

photo of LeeMaurice Lee (English) was awarded a Charles A. Ryskamp Research Fellowship from the American Council of Learned Societies. The fellowship, designed to help junior faculty advance their research, will allow Lee to explore how changing notions of chance in the 19th century influenced American literature and to situate the works of writers such as Herman Melville, Emily Dickinson, and Henry David Thoreau.

photo of SalehBahaa Saleh (Electrical and Computer Engineering) received the 2006 Kuwait Prize in Basic Sciences from the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences. The award recognizes Saleh's contributions to the field of optical science, including his extensive research in squeezed and entangled light.

Jodi Abbott (Obstetrics-Gynecology), won the 2007 Clinical Educator of the Year Award from BUSM.

Abu Abdullah (International Health) was named a Fellow of the Faculty of Public Health by the Royal College of Physicians and received an Outstanding Health Promotion Project Award from the government of Hong Kong.

Sachiko Akiyama (Visual Arts) received the Joan Mitchell Award and an Artist Resource Trust Grant.

Lynne Allen (Visual Arts) received a Whiting Foundation Award.

George Annas (Health Law) was awarded the Pellegrino Medal in Bioethics from Samford University.

Theodore Antoniou (Music) was awarded the distinction of Commander of the Order of Honor, Greece.

Caroline Apovian (Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Nutrition) received the American Society of Clinical Nutrition's Physician Nutritionist Specialist Award.

Emily Barman (Sociology) was awarded the Association of Fundraising Professionals' Skystone Ryan Research Prize for her book Contesting Communities.

Ethan Baxter (Earth Sciences) was honored with the F. W. Clarke Medal of the Geochemical Society.

Jeffrey F. Beatty (Strategy and Policy) won the Boston University Metcalf Cup and Prize for Excellence in Teaching.

Laurence Beck (Nephrology) received a Junior Faculty Award from Amgen.

John Bernardo (Pulmonary Center) received the Massachusetts Thoracic Society's Henry D. Chadwick Medal.

Azer Bestavros (Computer Science) was elected chair of the Technical Committee on the Internet for the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers Communications Society.

Shalender Bhasin (Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Nutrition) was listed as one of the Best Doctors in Boston by the National Guidelines Committee.

Jag Bhawan (Dermatology) received the Walter R. Nickel Award for Excellence in Teaching from the American Society of Dermatopathology. He also won the research Award for best abstract "Quantitative analysis of dermal small fibers in Parkinson's disease and multiple system atrophy."

Gregory Binus (Psychiatry) received the Exemplary Psychiatrist Award from the National Association for the Mentally Ill and the American Psychiatry Association.

Penelope Bitzas (Music) and Eric P. Widmaier (Biology) received the Boston University Metcalf Award for Excellence in Teaching.

Brooke Blower (History), Sucharita Chandran (Marketing), John Connor (Microbiology), and Marah Curtis (Social Welfare Policy) were awarded Peter Paul Career Development Professorships.

Zvi Bodie (Finance and Economics) was named the Norman and Adele Barron Professor in Management.

Donald Booth (Oral Surgery) was inducted into the Royal College of Surgeons.

Lynn Borgatta (Obstetrics-Gynecology), was given the best paper award for Kapp N, Borgatta L, Stubblefield P, Vragovic O, Moreno N. Mifepristone in Midtrimester Medical Abortion: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

Steven Borkan (Nephrology) received the Massachusetts Medical Society's Grant V. Rodkey Award for outstanding contributions to medical education.

Lewis Braverman (Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Nutrition) received the Endocrine Society's Robert Williams Distinguished Service Award.

Frederic Brunel (Marketing), Jonathan Hibbard (Marketing), and Peter Russo (Strategy and Policy) each received the Award for Excellence in Entrepreneurship Teaching and Pedagogical Innovation from the National Consortium of Entrepreneurship Centers.

James Burns (Danielsen Institute) was honored with the Early Career Psychologist Award from the National Register of Health Service Psychologists and the American Psychological Association.

William Carroll (English) and James Winn (English) received Fellowships from the American Council of Learned Societies.

Christos Cassandras (Manufacturing Engineering) and David Castañón (Electrical and Computer Engineering) were named Distinguished Members of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers Control Systems Society.

Serena Chao (Geriatrics), received Best Faculty Abstract for her abstract entitled, "Comparison of On-line Curriculum to Lecture Format in Teaching Delirium to 4th Year Medical Students."

Suzanne Chapin (Curriculum and Teaching) received the 2006 Award for Exemplary Curriculum in Mathematics for Gifted and Talented Students from the National Association for Gifted Children.

Aram V. Chobanian (Medicine) and Ha Jin (Creative Writing) were elected members of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Aram Chobanian won the Ellis Island Medal of Honor and was elected as Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. 

Cutler Cleveland (Geography and Environment) received the Adelman/Frankel Award from the United States Association for Energy Economics.

Alan S. Cohen (School of Medicine) was recognized with an outstanding achievement award at the International Symposium on Amyloidosis.

Herbert Cohen (Nephrology) was elected to the American Society for Clinical Investigation.

Hannah Cole (Visual Arts) received the Helene Wurlitzer Foundation Award and the Platte Clove Artist-in-Residence Fellowship.

Theodore Colton (Epidemiology) was selected by the American Public Health Association to deliver the 2006 Lowell Reed Lecture.

Catherine Costello (Mass-Spec-Research), won the Life Science Excellence Award, presented by the President of Ireland, Dr. Mary McAleese, in a ceremony held at Mt. Sinai School of Medicine.

Wendy Coster (Occupational Therapy and Rehabilitation Counseling) received the Eleanor Clarke Slagle Lectureship Award from the American Occupational Therapy Association.

Andrea Coviello (Endocrinology, Diabetes & Nutrition), was invited to be the Symposium Chair for session at the 89th Annual Endocrine Society Meeting, June 3, 2007, Toronto, Canada.

Ralph D'Agostino (Mathematics and Statistics) was named the Remington Lecturer by the American Heart Association.

Michele David (General Medicine), was appointed by Governor Deval Patrick to the MA Public Health Council, the policy arm of the MA Department of Public Health. 

Carlo De Luca (NeuroMuscular Research Center) and his company, Delsys, received a Tibbetts Award from the Small Business Administration.

Isabel Dominguez (Hematology/Oncology); Haralambos Gavras (Hypertension); Albena Halpert, Brian Jacobson, Robert Lowe, Satish Singh, Diane Song, and Michael Wolfe (all of Gastroenterology); and Yuqing Zhang (Epidemiology) were named members of the National Guidelines Committee.

Thomas Einhorn (Orthopedics) received the Dr. Marian Ropes Award for Excellence from the Massachusetts Arthritis Association. He also won the 2008 Alfred R. Shands, Jr. Awards, a combined award from the Orthopaedic Research Society and the American Orthopaedic Assoc., given for lifetime achievement in orthopaedic research. He was also elected to the College of Fellows of the American Institute for Medical & Biological Engineering (AIMBE).

Sean Elliott (Chemistry), Emanuel Katz (Physics), Christopher Passaglia (Biomedical Engineering), Leonid Reyzin (Computer Science), Joshua Semeter (Electrical and Computer Engineering), and

Joan Walker (Geography and Environment) each received a National Science Foundation Career Award. Emanuel Katz also received a Sloan Fellowship and Leonid Reyzin was named a Fellow of the Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics.

Terry Everson (Music) led the BU Trumpet Ensemble to second place in the 2007 National Trumpet Competition.

Robert Ferrante (Alzheimer Kowall), won the Edward T. Bird Humanitarian Award.

Fred Foulkes (Organizational Behavior) received the American Compensation Committee's Lifetime Achievement Award.

Suzanne Freitag (Surg-Ophthalmology-Bmc), obtained accreditation from ASOPRS.

Jon Fuller (Physician), won the Department of Medicine Pilot Award.

Alan Geller (Dermatology) received the Environmental Protection Agency's Stratospheric Ozone Protection Award.

Barbara Gilchrest (Dermatology) was awarded the Stephen Rothman Medal by the Society for Dermatologic Investigation.

Michael Grodin (Health Law) delivered the Cabot Lecture at Harvard Medical School as well as the University Holocaust Lecture and Dean's Lecture at Vanderbilt University.

David Halle (Internal Medicine), won the Most Valuable Player-awarded by the Section of General Internal Medicine as the faculty member who is recognized for laudable achievement within the section.

Eric Hardt (Geriatrics), became a Robert Dawes Evans Clinical Educator, a newly developed group of experienced clinicians with focus on inpatient medical education.

Linda Heywood (African American Studies) received a fellowship from the W. E. B. DuBois Institute for African and African American Studies.

Ariel Hirsch (Radiology) received the Nathan Smith Award from the New England Surgical Society.

Brian Jack (Family Medicine), won the 2007 Patient Care Award for Excellence in Patient Education Innovation by the STFM.

Alice Jacobs (Cardiology) received the American Heart Association's Paul Dudley White Award.

Zhimon Jacobson (Dental Medicine) received an honorary doctorate from the University of Bucharest.

Angela Jefferson (Neurology Kase), was the recipient of the Paul B. Beeson Career Development Award in Aging.

Peggy Johnson (Psychiatry) was named Clinical Psychiatrist of the Year by the Massachusetts Psychiatry Society.Judith Jones (Dental Medicine) received the International Association of Dental Research's Distinguished Scientist Award.

Shiro Kamachi (Dental Medicine) received an Outstanding Faculty Award from Procter & Gamble.

Margaret Kelly-Hayes (Framingham Heart Study), won the 2007 Stroke Council Award.

Spencer Kemp (Dental Medicine) was named a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology.

Daniel King (Psychiatry), received the Distinguished Graduate Award.

Fred Kleiner (Art History) received the Text and Academic Authors Association's Text Prize for A History of Roman Art.

Nancy Kopell (Mathematics) received the Weldon Memorial Prize from the University of Oxford and was selected to be the John von Neumann lecturer by the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics.

Lev Levitin (Electrical and Computer Engineering) was named a Life Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers.

Weiling Lu was the recipient of the 2007 Pediatric Renal Research Award from the National Kidney Foundation of Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New Hampshire and Vermont (MA/RI/NH/VT).

Don Lucas (Music) was elected President of the International Trombone Association.Jennifer Luebke (Anatomy/Neurobiology), was named Educator of the year in graduate sciences.

Robert Margo (African American Studies) received the Clio Award for exceptional service in cliometrics.

Cathie Jo Martin (Political Science) was named a Fellow of the Radcliffe Institute.

Norman Mazer (Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Nutrition) received the North American Menopause Society and Procter & Gamble's Pharmaceutical Androgen Research Award.

Ann Mckee (Framingham Heart Study), received the Moore Award, Honorable Mention.

Michael Meurer (Law) received the David Saul Smith Scholarship Award.

Hamid Nawab (Electrical and Computer Engineering) was elected a Fellow of the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering.

Patricia Nemec (Occupational Therapy and Rehabilitation Counseling) received the John Beard Award from the U.S. Psychiatric Rehabilitation Association.

Stephanie Oberhaus (Microbiology),  won the The Crest, Oral B, Proctor and Gamble Professional Oral Health Excellence in Teaching in the Basic Sciences Award in addition to the Stanley L. Robbins Award for Excellence in Teaching at BUSM.

Rebecca Perkins (Obstetrics-Gynecology), received the 2007-2008 ACOG/Merck research Award on Adolescent Health Preventative Services.

Frank Perna (Mental Health and Behavioral Medicine) received the Walter Peach Award from the Association of Applied Sport Psychology.

Jean E. Ramsey (Ophthalmology) received the American Academy of Ophthalmology Achievement Award in addition to being named to the Board of Trustees of the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

Jose Romero (Neurology Kase), won the Neurology Residency teaching award for   Outstanding dedication to teaching of neurology residents.

Amy Rosen (Health Services) received the Career Scientist Award from the Department of Veterans Affairs.

David Rosenbloom (Join Together), was the recipient of the Annual Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Field.

Ronald Roy (Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering) was named George Eastman Distinguished Visiting Professor at the University of Oxford.

Jeffrey Rubin (History) received an American Philosophical Society Fellowship.

Thomas Ryan (Cardiology) received the Distinguished Fellow Award from the American Heart Association's Council on Clinical Cardiology.

Vivien Schmidt (International Relations) was named Chaire Francqui Professor at the Université Libre de Bruxelles and Université Catholique de Louvain.

Bruce Schulman (History) received the Nancy Lyman Roelker Award from the American Historical Association.

Sepehr Sekhavat (Pediatrics), won the Jerome O. Klein Award for Teaching Excellence.

Sudha Seshadri (Neurology Kase), received the Boston University Department of Neurology Resident Award for Outstanding Dedication to Resident Education.

Barry Shauck (Visual Arts) was elected President of the National Art Education Association.

Michael Shwartz (Operations and Technology) was named the Richard D. Cohen Professor in Management.

Donald Small (Physiology and Biophysics) was named a Distinguished Scientist by the American Heart Association.

Jeffrey Spiegel (Otolaryngology) received the Honor Award and Big on Goals Award from the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery.

Steve Stecklow (Journalism) received the Gilbert and Ursula Farfel Prize for Investigative Journalism and the Philip Meyer Award for Precision Journalism.

Casey Taft (Psychiatry) received the Danieli Young Professional Award from the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies.

Murad Taqqu (Mathematics and Statistics) was honored with the ACM/SIGCOMM Test of Time Award.

Vickery Trinkaus-Randall (Biochemistry), was honored for serving as Co-section Chair of the Annual Meeting Program committee.

Selim Ünlü (Electrical and Computer Engineering) was elected a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers.

Chihhung Wang (Pediatrics), was named the Robert Wood Johnson Physician Faculty Scholar.

Rosanna Warren (English, Romance Studies) was appointed a Visiting Scholar by the Phi Beta Kappa Society.

Carolyn Wehler (Dental Medicine) received the Dental Hygienist of the Year Award from the Massachusetts Dental Hygienists' Association.

John Wiecha (Family Medicine), publication was selected as the key medical education literature of 2006.

Kevin Wilson (Pulmonary Center), was named an Expert Clinician.

Robert Witzburg (Admissions Office), was given the honor of having his name applied to the New teaching award created in the Department of Medicine:  Robert A. Witzburg General Internal Medicine Teaching Award.

Philip Wolf (Framingham Heart Study), received an Honorary Doctorate of Science from the State University of New York.

James Wolff (International Health) was named Community Physician of the Year by the Massachusetts Medical Society.

Donald Wroblewski (Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering) received the Senior Research Associate Award from the National Research Council and Air Force Research Lab.

Gary Young (Health Services) received the Investigative Award in Health Policy Research from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

Barry Zuckerman (Pediatrics), was named the Starkey Davis Lecturer.
