Graduate Funding

Boston University provides eligible graduate students with merit and need-based assistance through various fellowships, assistantships, and scholarships.

There are many sources of financial assistance for students enrolled in graduate programs. Many forms of assistance are specific to a school or college at Boston University as listed below. Other sources of assistance for graduate education and research are available through the Office of Sponsored Programs and the Office of Fellowships and Scholarships.

 

University-Wide Graduate Funding Opportunities

Presidential University Graduate Fellowships (PUGF)
Award consists of full tuition plus a substantial stipend for up to four years of support. Fellowships are given to exceptional entering Ph.D. students in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, College of Engineering, and the Division of Graduate Medical Science. Students do not apply directly for this award but are nominated by departments, divisions, and programs. Administered by the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (617) 353-2696.

National Resource Fellowships
Award consists of stipends or tuition scholarships. Applicants must be US citizens or permanent resident, accepted to full-time degree program in social sciences or in a graduate professional program, must enroll in an African language course and an African area course each semester fellowship is received. Administered by the Director, African Studies Center (617) 353-3673.

Whitney M. Young, Jr. Fellowship
This one-year award consists of full tuition and fees plus a stipend for living. Applicants must be African American, US citizens, entering or continuing students, and exhibit academic proficiency in a field related to race relations or urban problems. Administered by the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (617) 353-2696.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Fellowship
Award consists of full tuition and fees plus a stipend for living expenses. Fellowships are awarded to entering African American students who are US citizens. Students do not apply directly for award but are nominated by particular admissions department. Administered by the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (617) 353-2696.

Teaching Fellowships (Please consult individual school or college for availability)
Stipends range from $10,500-$12,500 (please consult individual school or college for stipend range). Tuition scholarship is also provided. Recipients must perform instructional and other duties adding to 20 hours per week. Administered by individual school or college if Teaching Fellowships are offered.

Graduate Assistantships, Research Assistantships, Research Fellowships, Traineeships (Please consult individual school or college for availability)
Stipends are comparable to that of Teaching Fellowships. Recipients' duties vary. Administered by the individual department chairman of the particular school to which applicant is applying.
