Faculty Funding

The Office of the Provost has established special funds to support innovative research projects during early development, as well as those projects with commercial potential.

Special Program for Research Initiation Grants (SPRInG)

Please note: There will be no SPRInG awards for the 2006/07 academic year.

This fund, inaugurated by the Provost, provides seed money to help launch and develop new, cross-disciplinary research projects on the Charles River Campus. Its aim is to encourage innovative, new projects that require an initial research effort in order to be competitive for significant, long-term, extramural support. Such projects may involve new areas of scholarship and/or new interdisciplinary research activities.

The program facilitates proof of concept activities with the specific expectation that a fully developed proposal will be submitted to an external funding agency or private foundation within 24 months of receipt of an award. It is also expected that awards will generate publishable papers, exhibitions, or presentations at conferences.

Address applications to:
SPRInG, Office of the Provost, One Sherborn Street, Boston, Massachusetts 02215

CTF Technology Development Awards

The Community Technology Fund established the Technology Development Awards to support and advance faculty research exhibiting commercial potential. Typical awards range from $20,000-$50,000 and are applied toward research and development. Selection is based upon market opportunity/commercial potential, likelihood of success, and value added by the award amount. There are no specific deadlines for the Technology Development Award applications. CTF accepts applications as they are received, reviews them as quickly as possible, and notifies the applicant.

Office of Corporate and Foundation Relations

The Office of Corporate and Foundations Relations in the University's Development Office works to obtain private financial support from corporations and foundations for high-priority University projects and programs.
