Agents that are present in existing colonies, but that we preferentially exclude from incoming shipments (we request agent-free animals as the first choice, but will accept animals infected with these agents:

  • Bordetella bronchiseptica
  • Selected Helicobacter species (excluded from 670 and W9 barrier facilities, permitted in other facilities)
  • Klebsiella pneumonia and K. oxytoca
  • Pasteurella. species

Agents that we do not exclude from incoming vendors:

  • Pasteurella spp (other than P. multocida and P. pneumotropica)
  • Pseudomonas aeruginosa
  • Staphylococcus aureus
  • Streptococcus pneumoniae
  • Beta Strep spp (including Group B and Group G)

Note: We restrict severely immunodeficient animals (scids, nudes) to barriers free of all the above agents plus Pneumocystis carinii.

Testing of immunodeficient rodents Immunodeficient rodents require adjustments in testing, since they do not develop serum antibodies. These may include use of contact sentinels and virus testing.

*Testing during enzootics The LASC reserves the right to test more frequently than stated above during enzootics at the discretion of the Veterinary Staff. For example, during the present MPV enzootic, mice are tested for MPV every 6 weeks.
