Aquatic Species

Although the risk of infection from marine life is remote, it is recommended that special care be taken when handling these animals, their habitats and equipment.  Gloves should be work when handling the animal or coming in contact with the tank water.  Use a net to handle the animal whenever it is feasible.

The following symptoms may be related to aquarium related exposures:

GI Upset

Aeromonas hydrophilia, Edwardsiella tarda, Giardia species, Plesiomonas shigelloides, Vibrio species, Yersinia enterocolitica.

Fever

Edwardsiella tarda, Pasteurella multocida, Yersinia enterocolitica.

Skin Lesions

Listeria monocytogenes, Mycobacterium marinum, Vibrio species.

Cellulitis

Aeromonas hydrophila, Plesiomonas shigelloides, Streptococcus iniae, Vibrio vulnificus.

Spontaneous Abortion

Listeria monocytogenes.
