Oman: Atlas of Oman from Landsat Images

Project Summary:

This project is aimed at the preparation of material for an atlas of the Sultanate of Oman from satellite images that is usable by government personnel, private citizens and tourists alike. Images obtained by Landsat satellites will be used for this purpose. This is particularly true of the Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM), which produces images at 30 meters resolution. At this resolution, the major features of the land are portrayed, but nothing of national security concern is revealed. The TM images also clearly portray topographic features and large man-made structures in addition to roads and desert tracks.

The project will be undertaken by the same team that conducted the research leading to the preparation of "Wadis of Oman: Satellite Image Atlas". The images to be used for the proposed atlas have been enhanced for said project.

The atlas will be in about 150 pages. Each page will contain a 50x50 kilometer region of the Sultanate of Oman. The pages will show the towns and villages as well as the roads in addition to forts and other features of archaeological significance. Names will appear in both Arabic and English.
