Scientific Appointments
- Member of the
Task Group for Lunar Nomenclature of the International Astronomical
Union: Since 1973 participated in the classification and naming
of surface features of the Moon as revealed by lunar missions.
- Member of the
Executive Committee of the International Symposium on Remote Sensing
of Environment. The Committee, which is sponsored by the Environmental
Research Institute of Michigan, Ann Arbor MI, organizes annual meetings
and publishes their proceedings.
- Scientific Advisor
to President Anwar Sadat of the Arab Republic of Egypt (1978-1981):
Advised the late President Sadat on scientific matters particularly
those relating to desert development. Served in this capacity as a member
of the Advisory Council to the President of Egypt.
- Fellow of the
American Association for the Advancement
of Science; cited "for research in remote sensing, desert geomorphology
and planetary geology and for contributions to the public understanding
of science."
- Member (elected
in 1983) of the Corporation of the Museum of Science and Charles Hayden
