Watch Dr. El-Baz on NECN Discuss Mubarak’s Irrelevancy
(NECN) – As early as Thursday, former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak could be released from prison and placed under house arrest.
Whether that will be served at home or in a military hospital is unclear.
The 85-year old has been in prison since 2011 on corruption charges and is also being re-tried on charges of failing to stop mass killings during the uprising in Egypt in 2011.
Our guest grew up in Egypt.
Dr. Farouk El-Baz, who is a professor at Boston University, among other titles, joined NECN to discuss the current growing concerns in the Middle East.
Some analysts believe the release of Mubarak could be a symbolic return to the way things were before the uprising in 2011.
El-Baz said that majority of the Egyptians he has spoken with believe Mubarak is irrelevant.
How does el-Baz feel about the US’ actions in regard to Egypt?
“I think that doing something now it not advisable because the situation in Egypt is settled,” said el-Baz.
He said there is no point in cutting the aid, because the aid isn’t sent to Egypt, but spent on supplies in the US which are sent over.
