“The Contract”: Torah and Fiction

John J. Clayton is a professor emeritus of the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and professor at Mt. Holyoke College whose teaching interests include modern literature and fiction writing. Professor Clayton’s stories have been printed in a number of major periodicals and reprinted in anthologies including O.Henry Prize Stories and Best American Short Stories. He is the author of two collections of short stories (Bodies of the Rich and Radiance) and two novels (What Are Friends For? and The Man I Never Wanted to Be), and the critical studies Saul Bellow: In Defense of Man and Gestures of Healing.
Professor Clayton will be reading from his short story “The Contract,” published last spring in Commentary, and discussing the relationship between fiction and Torah as it relates to his work. The lecture will begin at 6:00 p.m. on the fourth floor of the Boston University School of Management at 595 Commonwealth Avenue, and will be followed by a light reception.
