Cogan joined the faculty of the Department as an Assistant Professor
of Asian Religions in Fall of 2005. She received her Ph.D. in Religious
Studies from Columbia University in 2004 and recently completed
a yearlong postdoctoral research fellowship at the Edwin O. Reischauer
Institute of Japanese Studies at Harvard University. A teacher of
Japanese Religion, Buddhism, Asian Religion and Women and Religion,
her interests also include Buddhism in the United States. Professor
Cogan's research focuses on the role of gender and monastic precepts
in the relationship of Buddhism to the state in premodern Japan.
Her research interests also include larger issues of women in Buddhism
in East Asia, Buddhism and law and social activism in religion.
Professor Cogan's recent publications include an article on Buddhist
nuns from the imperial family in Meiji Japan and an article on gender
and authenticity in J-pop.
