Registration in the Boston Area Consortia (cross registration)

Registration in the Boston Area Consortia is a formal agreement between Boston University and several local colleges and universities whereby BU students can attend courses at other institutions, and students from other institutions can attend courses at BU. The primary schools in the cross-registration consortium are Boston College, Brandeis University, Tufts University, and Hebrew College. The following are some general guidelines:

  • Students are eligible to cross-register for one course per semester.
  • Students may not register for LAW, MED-MD, SDM, PDP, or online courses.
  • Cross-registration is only available during the fall and spring semesters; no summer cross-registration.
  • Only matriculated students are eligible for cross-registration.
  • Students are charged by their home institution.
  • Part-time BU students will be charged the standard part-time tuition rate.
  • Full-time BU students who exceed 18 credits will be charged the standard part-time tuition rate.
  • Students must obtain four authorization signatures to complete cross-registration:
    1. Home Registrar’s signature to verify student’s matriculation and good standing.
    2. Advisor’s or dean’s signature to verify the student’s department has given authorization
    3. Course instructor’s signature.
    4. Host Registrar’s signature.

Cross Registration Procedures for BU Students

  • Boston University students should obtain a Cross-Registration Petition from the Boston University Registrar’s Office (881 Commonwealth Avenue, Second Floor) or from the host institution.
  • The completed Cross-Registration Petition must be signed by your advisor or dean, the BU Registrar’s Office and then the host institution’s Registrar’s Office. A copy of the completed form should be returned to the BU Registrar’s Office.
  • The copy of the signed Cross-Registration Petition must be submitted to the Registrar’s Office at Boston University as well as the host institution’s Registrar’s Office for official registration.
  • Policy: Both full-time and part-time degree candidates at Boston University are eligible to cross-register at the following institutions: Boston College, Brandeis University, Tufts University, Hebrew College and MIT.*
    • Students may cross-register for only one course per semester.
    • Cross-registration is not available during summer semesters.
    • Students will be charged by Boston University.
    • Full-time students who exceed 18 credits per semester will be charged at the standard part-time tuition rate.
    • Part-time students will be charged the standard part-time tuition rate.
    • Grades will be forwarded to Boston University by the host institution at the conclusion of the semester.

* Students majoring in African American Studies may cross-register at MIT for Economics and Political Science courses only.

* Graduate students are eligible to apply to take courses through the Graduate Consortium in Women’s Studies at MIT. (see additional instructions)


Boston University students who find it necessary to withdraw from the university while registered for a course at a consortium college or university, will follow the tuition refund schedule appropriate for their school or college at Boston University.


Cross Registration Procedures for Non-BU Students

  • Incoming students should obtain a Cross-Registration Petition from their home institution or from the Boston University Registrar’s Office (881 Commonwealth Avenue, Second Floor).
  • The completed Cross-Registration Petition must be signed by your home school advisor or dean, and by the BU course instructor.
  • The signed Cross-Registration Petition must then be submitted to the Boston University Registrar’s Office for official registration. Once registered, you will be mailed a part-time Boston University identification card.
  • A copy of the petition must be submitted to your home institution as well.
  • Policy: Both full-time and part-time degree candidates are eligible to cross-register from the following institutions: Boston College, Brandeis University, Tufts University and Hebrew College.
    • Students may cross-register for only one course per semester.
    • Cross-registration is not available during summer semesters.
    • Students will be charged by their home institution.
    • Grades will be forwarded from Boston University to the home institution.
