**Landing a full time job as an opera singer is a rarity as the field requires singers to work as freelance/independent contractors. Most jobs are acquired by audition, some singers are fortunate enough to have management who facilitate auditions on the singer's behalf. In general, each contract for a given opera production lasts anywhere from four to six weeks. Most young singers start off their careers as apprentice artists, some apprenticeships take place during the summer, some are year long.
