Latin Honors

Among graduating seniors in each School and College, Latin Honors are awarded to the top 30% of the class as follows:

  • Summa Cum Laude – top 5%
  • Magna Cum Laude – next 10%
  • Cum Laude – next 15%

The “break points,” that is, the GPA ranges corresponding to each of these honors categories, will be determined for each School and College on February 1 of each year based on the penultimate semester’s GPAs of the senior class. These GPA break points will be applied to that year’s May graduates on February 1, September graduates on September 1 and January graduates on January 2 based on their GPA at the time Honors are applied.

May graduates whose final semester grades improve their GPAs sufficiently to move them into a higher Latin Honors category will be assigned those honors.

Please note:

  • In no case will Latin Honors be given for GPAs below 3.0.
  • In all schools and colleges except the College of Engineering, PDP and OTP courses are excluded from Latin Honors calculations. ENG excludes PDP courses only.
  • Some graduate programs award Latin honors or School honors. Contact your School or College for more information.
