580 FAQ’s

I’ve submitted my 580 Commonwealth Avenue application, what’s the next step?
Once you have submitted an application you will be put on a waiting list. The Real Estate office will contact you when an apartment becomes available. In some cases this may be 30-60 days in advance of the move-in date. In other instances it may be on shorter notice. If you are on the waiting list it is important to be accessible either by phone or email. Please note that placement in the building is not guaranteed.

What types of apartments are available?
580 Commonwealth Avenue consists of 220 apartments with 209 studio apartments and 11 one bedroom apartments.

Is the lease term for one year or one school year?
All lease agreements are for one full calendar year (12 months).

How much is a studio or one bedroom?
Please see the rent structure page for all rents in the building.

What is required upon move-in?
A security deposit equal to one month’s rent and  first month’s rent.

Do you charge a broker’s fee?

When is the rent due?
Rent is due on or before the first day of each of month, in advance.

Where do I send my rent checks?
All monthly rental checks are required to be forwarded to Century Bank and Trust Co., c/o Boston University Real Estate,  P.O. Box 22, Medford, MA 02155. Please make sure that the apartment code is on the check. If you require the building code, please contact our accounting department at (617) 353-9833.

What utilities are included?
All the apartments at 580 Commonwealth Avenue include heat, hot water, electricity, and air conditioning.

Is cable television available in the building?
All the apartments at 580 Commonwealth Avenue have cable television jacks; however, please contact the cable television provider regarding the rates and to set up service.

Is internet available in the building?
All the apartments at 580 Commonwealth Avenue are wired with BU internet. This services is covered by the Student Services fee that is charged to your Student Account by Student Accounting Services. For more information click here.

Does the building have laundry facilities?
There is a large laundry room in the basement

Who do I call if something is broken?
For all maintenance problems during office hours, please contact the Maintenance Department at (617) 353-4102. After office hours, please contact the Facilities Management Department at (617) 353-2105.

If I get locked out or need extra keys, whom should I contact?
During office hours, you will need to come to the maintenance office to request keys. If it’s after hours, on the week-ends, or a holiday, you will need to contact your superintendent, Daniel Goldberg at 718-704-4069.

Are pets allowed?
Pets are not allowed in our apartments.

How much is parking?
If you require a parking spot, you must contact the Maintenance Department at (617) 353-4102. Keep in mind that there is a monthly fee for parking, and spots are limited. We can make no guarantees regarding parking availability.

Can I sublet my apartment?
Subletting is strictly prohibited.

Do you match roommates?
Our office does not provide roommate matching services nor do we resolve roommate disputes.

Can I extend my lease?
You must come into the office and fill out an extension form if you wish to extend your lease. We do not extend leases past August 15th. Please note that you will be charged accordingly for the additional days during which you occupy the apartment. When you complete a lease extension form you will be required to also fill out a vacate notice.

Who owns and maintains the apartments?
Trustees of Boston University.

What do I do if I want to live in 580 Commonwealth Avenue?
Complete and submit the 580 Commonwealth Avenue application and your name will be added to the waitlist.

Can anyone live in 580 Commonwealth Avenue?
580 Commonwealth Avenue is open to all full-time Boston University graduate students only. Faculty, staff, and undergraduate students are not eligible to live at 580 Commonwealth Avenue.
