Getting Started

Renting an apartment doesn’t need to be confusing. The Boston University Real Estate office has simplified the process to make finding and renting an apartment easy.

Note: To rent online, please see the 580 Commonwealth Avenue and Peabody Hall (graduate students only) pages. Placement in either building is not guaranteed.

Step 1 Contact us to schedule an appointment to view available apartments from our wide variety of apartment styles, sizes, and locations throughout the Charles River Campus.

Step 2 When you arrive at our office — located at 1019 Commonwealth Avenue, Boston, MA 02215 (entrance on Babcock Street) on the Charles River Campus, we will show you available apartments that meet your specific requirements. We won’t waste your time showing you apartments that don’t meet your needs.

Step 3 After looking at available units, you select the apartment that best suits your needs. We suggest that you act quickly when making your selection because available apartments tend to rent quickly, particularly during the busy summer rental season, and between semesters.

Step 4 To secure the apartment of your choice, you will need to provide a deposit for the apartment. The security deposit is equal to one month’s rent. Deposits must be paid by check, money order, or credit card. (However, credit card payments are NOT recommended – See FAQs.) At that time, you will also sign the rental agreement and receive information regarding utilities and other matters concerning your apartment. Please be advised if you place a deposit on an apartment and decide not to rent the apartment or change your mind, your deposit will not be refunded.

(Please Note: All faculty and staff rentals are subject to approval by the Office of the Provost.)

Step 5 The day your rental agreement starts, visit our office and pay the first month’s rent, sign your lease, pick up your keys, and move in.

It’s as simple as that!

Unlike most area realtors and landlords, Boston University does not require that you pay a broker’s fee or the last month’s rent in advance. We believe that renting your new apartment should be as easy and stress-free as possible.
