Jonathan Goodlow
MBA+ MS in Media Ventures Richmond, CaliforniaJonathan Goodlow came to Questrom with a different kind of undergraduate and work experience. “I’ve always been fascinated with video games,” he explains. “My undergraduate education taught me animation, visual effects, sculpture, digital filmmaking, and game art among many other skills. I got my bachelor’s degree in digital visual media, and I began my career as a video game artist shortly afterward.”
After working at numerous startups and gaining experience on several high-profile titles over the course of 10 years, Goodlow began to get frustrated. “Artists are being heavily outsourced, and studios are closing down nearly every other week. I wanted to increase my value to the video-game industry and break through the glass ceiling. An MBA gives me the best opportunity to do this and more.”
Although Boston is not known for game development, Goodlow realized that the city’s entrepreneurial vibe and Questrom’s degree program were a great fit for him. “I wanted a degree that would add to the current expertise and passion that I have for media and technology. The MBA+ MS in Media Ventures joint-degree program is training me in the skills of entrepreneurship, which are important when working in dynamic technological environments where innovation is constant. These are the type of work environments that I am familiar with, and the environments that I plan to continue working in post-graduation.”
Not only has he found what he needs in the classroom, he’s added experience with an internship at Autodesk, Inc., in San Francisco. “At Autodesk, I was given the chance to interact with several different employees who work in different parts of the world. I learned how to communicate well within such a large public company with a large range of focuses.” He also got experience in marketing, digital marketing, and product strategy.
And after graduation? What will Goodlow find on the next level? “I have a few business ideas,” he says. “If I am in a good enough place to pursue them after graduation, then I will. I would be just as happy to work in a technologically strong firm or media company in a strategy, product management, or brand management function. I am finding new positions that interest me every day, and realizing that my MBA is opening up possibilities even more than I imagined it would.”
