The full-time Public and Nonprofit MBA Program includes a 300-hour summer
internship and practical hands-on classroom and extracurricular consulting projects, at a variety of leading organizations. These experiences complement classroom learning, and often lead to permanent positions after graduation.

Link Day

BU MBA Link Day is an opportunity for small- to medium-sized nonprofit organizations to access cutting edge managerial expertise. Launched in April 2001 by the Public and Nonprofit Management club, this one-day consulting experience brings together nonprofits, MBA students, academics, and local professionals to analyze a specific problem facing an organization and provide practical strategic solutions.

Providing real-world business solutions

For more than a decade teams of MBA students, faculty and alumni from Boston University have reached out to the local nonprofit community to help solve business challenges. Bringing consulting expertise in marketing, finance and technology, this student-run program provides services that might ordinarily cost many thousands of dollars.

Past Projects

Potential projects can range from issues regarding technology, real estate, social media, marketing, operations, development, finance, and strategic growth. Last year’s projects included:

  • Assessing current marketing initiatives and providing recommendations for alternative approaches and evaluation of successful initiatives
  • Analyzing financial management/accounting procedures and suggesting appropriate systems
  • Developing an outreach plan and establishing measures of success
  • Assessing current fundraising efforts and offering recommendations regarding prioritization and goal-setting

Collaborative Consulting

The mission of the Collaborative Consulting Program (CCP) is to provide students with the opportunity to gain experience in consulting practices and to apply knowledge from their business school coursework, while contributing to the betterment of local nonprofits and the Boston community with vital business and nonprofit management skills.

Teams of MBA students work collaboratively with participants from local nonprofits on semester long projects ranging from business development and fundraising plans to information systems evaluation and market research. Student participants learn to define and determine the scope of the project and the desired outcomes, and work with diverse teammates to investigate, clarify, research and provide recommendations on a business need brought by the nonprofit participant. The longer duration of the project, usually about 3 months, gives students an opportunity to really provide impactful recommendations and sometimes even begin implementing new programs or processes.

Nonprofit participants benefit from the broad experience and business knowledge of their consulting team, and students are able to gain insight into nonprofit operations and get hands-on experience—really a collaborative experience that benefits both.

The Collaborative Consulting Program is student led program supported by both the Public and Nonprofit (PNP) Club and the BU MBA Consulting Association. The program was launched in fall of 2009 by a group of ambitious students with a passion for providing service and skills to the nonprofit community in Boston. It began with two projects: providing marketing recommendations to support education outreach at the New England Aquarium and developing a fundraising plan for a pilot school for Tech Boston.


Board Fellows Program

BU on Board is an MBA Board Fellows program run cooperatively by Net Impact and the Public and Nonprofit Management Club at the Boston University School of Management. The program seeks to develop new leaders in the nonprofit sector while bringing fresh talent and perspectives to nonprofit boards.

Board Fellows will be active participants on their nonprofit boards, getting involved with committees and relevant projects. The program brings business skills to nonprofits and allows nonprofits to cultivate potential new board members, while exposing MBA students to nonprofit management and governance in practice.

Nationally, Net Impact has found that organizations that participate in Board Fellows:

  • Bring new perspectives into their organization
  • Receive high-quality assistance on projects requiring business skills
  • Support the professional development of emerging nonprofit leaders
  • Engage volunteers in their organization’s work
  • Cultivate potential new board members

BU on Board seeks partner organizations that will:

  • Host a pair of MBA Board Fellows from January-December of each year
  • Welcome the Board Fellows into board meetings and committee meetings as appropriate
  • Designate a board mentor who will advise, mentor, and assist Fellows in identifying a project that will contribute to the organization.
