Concentrations are open to students in the MBA, Health Sector Management, Public & Nonprofit Management, and MS·MBA programs. Students are encouraged to apply for concentrations during their second semester to take full advantage of the many activities sponsored by the respective departments and institutes. Applying for a concentration does not obligate a student to complete the requirements nor will it appear on their transcripts. Students who successfully complete the requirements for one or more concentrations receive a Certificate of Concentration upon graduation.
Energy and Environmental Sustainability
The Energy and Environmental Sustainability (EES) concentration is aligned with Questrom’s mission to prepare innovative and ethical leaders who understand the impact of business on society and create value for the world. Students completing this concentration will be able to understand the energy and sustainability-related challenges that businesses face, how business can adapt to these challenges, and how to identify, evaluate, and act upon the opportunities created by these changes.
The purpose of the concentration is to provide students an opportunity to develop a breadth of knowledge in energy and environmental issues to augment their deep disciplinary skills and other focus areas. For example, a student focusing in marketing may add this concentration in order to prepare for a career in marketing sustainability-related products. Or, a student with a finance concentration may seek this concentration in order to better evaluate the sustainability-based strategies of ventures seeking funding.
Students graduating with the EES concentration could seek work in a variety of companies across many industries. For example, there are already several BU Questrom alums working for the Boston-based energy-meets-IT company EnerNOC. Other students will go on to work in the sustainability offices of multi-national consumer product companies, working to improve the sustainability of products and supply chains. Some prior students have founded or joined one of the many clean tech ventures developing innovative technologies to solve energy and sustainability challenges world-wide. The concentration is also relevant for those students who want to lead organizations that are increasingly concerned with climate change and environmental sustainability.

Directed by the BUzz Lab in conjunction with the Strategy & Innovation Department, the Entrepreneurship Concentration promotes the development and application of entrepreneurial knowledge and skills. These entrepreneurial skills build on general MBA content to help you learn how to create value in an entrepreneurial context, which may be a new venture, an existing firm, a social enterprise, or a foreign market. The objective of the Entrepreneurship Concentration is to develop an entrepreneurial mindset and to provide a set of analytic frameworks that will significantly increase your project’s chance of success and its value realized.
The Entrepreneurship Concentration may be combined with a number of other functional (e.g., Finance, Marketing) or contextual (e.g., Energy and Environmental Sustainability, Health Sector Management) concentrations. A dual concentration that includes Entrepreneurship provides an excellent opportunity for students to further develop entrepreneurial expertise in specialized areas of interest.
The Entrepreneurship Concentration can be fulfilled by taking various electives.
The finance concentration is intended to teach students how the world financial system works both as a whole and from the perspective of different participants. These participants include private financial institutions, non-financial firms, individuals, governments (as borrowers), and governmental financial institutions (most notably central banks).
This concentration brings a global perspective to your business education, helping to prepare you to work effectively in an increasingly borderless economy. International Management concentrators, through their required international field experience, gain first-hand knowledge of how foreign government agencies and/or private companies are run. Our international field seminars are currently offered in Europe, Brazil, India, and Asia.
In addition to the International Management concentration, the School offers a One-year International MBA that begins in Beijing, moves on to Shanghai, and finishes in Boston. Through this accelerated program, you also have the opportunity to gain additional international experience through our international field seminars offered in Brazil, Europe, India, and Asia.
Leadership and Organizational Transformation
The concentration in Leadership and Organizational Transformation will provide students with the opportunity to develop the essential knowledge and skills required of those who want to lead and/or facilitate successful change or transformation in individuals, groups, and/or organizations. Some concentrations prepare students to be experts in a particular content area; this concentration helps students to become skilled at the process of designing and implementing change.

The Marketing concentration is designed to provide MBA students the opportunity to focus their course of study in an area of interest, interact with other like-minded students and marketing faculty, and convey their interest in marketing to prospective employers.
Operations and Technology Management
The Operations and Technology Management (OTM) concentration is designed to provide MBA students the opportunity to develop capabilities in operations and technology management that will enable them to enhance their organizations’ efficiency and effectiveness. We believe an organization’s ability to create value is critical to its long-term survival and that through operations, strategy is translated into the actions that deliver value.
Strategy and Business Analysis
The Concentration in Strategy & Innovation has three streams of courses addressing different parts of the strategic management problem—to develop and execute strategies that cope with change, with financial, technological and human resource limits, and yield a competitive advantage in the organization’s chosen markets. Part of the management problem is economic; part is political—inside and outside the organization. The lists of required electives and the fully elective courses of the concentration will continue to be developed to allow students to specialize or range across these three streams of action and knowledge to match their career interests.
