Healthcare leader leads students forward

Ken Freeman, Allen Questrom Professor and Dean led the conversation with Jonathan Woodson, MD, Larz Anderson Professor in Management, Professor of the Practice, Markets, Public Policy, and Law, Director, Institute for Health Systems Innovation and Policy during the last Dean’s Speaker Series of the semester, held on November 9th.

Woodson, former Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs and principal advisor to the Secretary of Defense for health issues, shared stories from inside the industry. He served with the US Department of Defense from 2010 until 2016, in 2008 he was listed as one of the Top Surgeons in the U.S., and has roughly 25 years of military experience. It’s no question that Woodson is a leader in his industry. The question is: How do you get there?

Woodson shed some light on this, providing students advice for becoming a healthcare leader. Here’s a glimpse of some of the tips he shared:

VALUE is VALUED

Woodson explained, “When you’re in companies and industries if you don’t create value, then you’re out of business.”  Later in the discussion he urged students to, “Remain enthusiastic, remain energetic, remain committed to creating value.”

“Remain enthusiastic, remain energetic, remain committed to creating value.”

COMFORT ISN’T KEY

Woodson stressed students to push themselves past comfort. “One thing I say to students is that you constantly have to live outside your comfort zone because that’s where you’re going to grow.”

IT’S RISKY BUSINESS

Being bold, was part of Woodson’s advice, ‘If you think you’re going to develop yourself as a leader and not take risks, then you’re fooling yourself.” Later in the discussion he stressed the importance of taking risks, “You’ can’t be a strategic leader unless you’re willing to take and manage risk.”
