Make a List, Check it Twice
It’s the most wonderful time of the year. But, stressing about holiday spending—isn’t.
The National Retail Federation released that this year’s personal holiday spending level is estimated to be the second highest in the survey’s 13-year history. Additionally, the per-person holiday-spending amount is expected to increase more than $100 since just last year.
WalletHub asked a panel of experts to share money-saving advice to keep consumer budgets in check as they tackle their holiday shopping lists. Experts used five key metrics to estimate and compare the maximum holiday budgets for each of 570 US cities.
One of the featured experts was Questrom’s Susan Fournier, Senior Associate Dean and Questrom Professor in Management. Part of her advice on how to avoid holiday overspending was actually quite simple, “make a list.” She explained that making a list provides limits to your shopping plan.
Fournier also shared interesting insight on how to show appreciation for those on your shopping list without having to drop big bucks. She explained, “Experiences make people happier than ‘things.’ Give someone an experience.”
Read the rest of Fournier’s advice so that you can avoid holiday overspending this shopping season, stress less, and focus on the true meaning of the season.
