There are 2.2 million people incarcerated in the United States. Research has shown that education is one of the most effective ways to decrease crime and the financial and societal costs of incarceration, as incarcerated people who participated in education programs were less likely to return to prison than those who did not and were also better positioned to successfully re-enter society and make positive impacts on their families and communities. This seminar will explore the transformative power of education and feature faculty, students, and advocates who have experiences on all sides of a range of prison education programs. Speakers will share their perspectives on the importance of educating the incarcerated, the experience of receiving an education as a formerly incarcerated individual, and the opportunities for university students to get involved. Lunch provided.
