IS&T SCV Tutorial - Introduction to Linux

  • Starts: 10:00 am on Tuesday, May 28, 2013
  • Ends: 12:00 pm on Tuesday, May 28, 2013
This tutorial will give attendees enough of the basics of Linux so that they will be able to understand and navigate files and directories; create, edit, and delete files; log in to remote Linux machines from their Macintosh or Microsoft Windows laptop or workstation and use applications such as Matlab and X Windows displays. Attendees will choose an editor they want to learn, Vim or Emacs, and use it to create a simple BASH script and C program (foreknowledge of BASH and C is not required). Some more advanced Linux topics will be introduced such as how to use the utilities “egrep,” “sed,” and “awk,” along with regular expressions. The goal for this class is to make the attendees comfortable and efficient in working at the Linux command line. Anyone working with scientific software or doing development work on a Linux host or computer cluster needs these skills. If you try to sign up for this tutorial and find that it is full, please send email to scv-tutorial@bu.edu and we will do our best to accommodate you.
