The BU Hub: Boston University’s New General Education Program

From Dr. Jean Morrison, University Provost and Chief Academic Officer

As many of you know, freshmen entering in fall of 2018 will be enrolled in the BU Hub, Boston University’s new, university-wide general education program. As continuing undergraduate students, it is important to note that your general education requirements will not change.

A university curriculum is always evolving. New programs and degrees are developed, and major and minor requirements change as we embrace the development of new knowledge and respond to the changing world in which we live. The BU Hub is an innovative program aligned with Boston University’s ongoing mission to educate students to be reflective, resourceful individuals ready to live, adapt, and lead in an interconnected world.

Starting in fall 2018, you will be able to enroll in courses that count towards the BU Hub.  You will also have the opportunity to work on an interdisciplinary project-based team in the BU Hub’s signature course, the Cross-College Challenge (XCC). This elective course is being run as a pilot which you can take this fall or in summer 2018.  Please visit the XCC website to learn more and discuss the opportunity with your advisor.  Again, these are new curricular opportunities that we hope you will find exciting and interesting – but if you choose to participate in BU Hub courses, it does not commit you to fulfilling new general education requirements.

We have been working on the development of the BU Hub for several years now, and it is an exciting and important time in the history of undergraduate education at Boston University to see the program coming to fruition. We are delighted to share these new opportunities with you.
