Appointment of Dr. Christopher Moore as Dean of Sargent College

From Dr. Jean Morrison, University Provost and Chief Academic Officer

Last fall, we commenced a national-level search for a new Dean of the College of Health & Rehabilitation Sciences: Sargent College. Given Sargent College’s stature as one of the nation’s preeminent schools in health science, it was critical that we identify candidates with the dynamic leadership experience and reputation for clinical and scholarly excellence necessary to guide the College forward. We have completed an in depth search process, and after thorough consultation with our Search Advisory Committee, President Brown and I are delighted to announce the appointment of Dr. Christopher Moore as Dean of Sargent College.

Dr. Moore served for the last three years as Scientific Program Manager for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs’ Sensory Systems and Communications Disorders Program – a position in which he oversaw rehabilitation research to diagnose and treat some of the most common post-service problems afflicting Veterans, from balance disorders and visual impairment to disorders of speech, hearing sensitivity and auditory processing. Dr. Moore has spent his career as a widely respected researcher, professor and practitioner of rehabilitation science, focusing largely on issues of speech and hearing. A graduate of the University of California, San Diego, he received both his PhD and Master’s degrees in Speech Science from Purdue University. He served for more than 20 years in the professoriate, serving most recently as Professor and Chair in the University of Washington’s Department of Speech and Hearing Sciences, where his seminal research in the developmental physiology of speech motor control was supported by substantial federal funding. Prior to joining the VA in 2011, Dr. Moore spent four years as Health Science Administrator for the National Institutes of Health, National Institute for Deafness and Other Communication Disorders. A frequent international speaker, he has a rich publication history, with original research in orofacial motor control, respiratory physiology, and speech development having appeared in numerous top journals.

Through extensive conversations with him about his vision and ambitions for Sargent College, it became clear that Dr. Moore’s scholarly credentials, demonstrated leadership and exceptionally strong track record of federal grant writing, interdisciplinary research and new program development were an ideal match for our needs at SAR. He officially began his duties on August 15, and also holds a faculty appointment as Professor of Speech, Language & Hearing Sciences.

I’d like to express my gratitude to the members of the Dean Search Advisory Committee, to the members of the University Appointments, Promotion and Tenure Committee, and to the Sargent College community for their assistance throughout this process. I would like to also give special thanks to Interim Dean Kathleen Morgan for her excellent work over this past year and for her efforts in helping to ensure a smooth transition in leadership.

I hope you will join me in welcoming Chris Moore to Boston University.
