Who will win the Oscar in 2013?

February 20th, 2013

oscarBoston University’s College of Communication offers their version of the Oscar’s during its annual Redstone Film Festival, which showcases the best short films written and directed by COM’s undergraduates and graduate students.

Professor Voices asked Paul Schneider, Chairman of COM’s Department of Film & Television, and a member of the Directors Guild of America, for his predictions on who will take away the Oscar in the top categories at Sunday’s 85th Annual Oscar Awards. His predictions vary greatly from this year’s winners of the Golden Globes, SAG Awards, and the DAG Awards. His choices for the Oscar are:

Best Actor: Daniel Day-Lewis (Lincoln), a clear winner in this category.

Best Actress: Quvenzhane Wallis (Beasts of the Southern Wild), although Emmanuelle Riva (Amour) could also win.

Best Supporting Actor: Robert De Niro (Silver Linings Playbook), although this category is a crap shoot and the award could easily go to Christoph Waltz (Django Unchained) or Philip Seymour Hoffman (The Master).

Best Supporting Actress: Anne Hathaway (Les Miserables), the closest thing to a slam dunk on the list.

Best Director: Benh Zeitlin (Beasts of the Southern Wild), although another tough call as it really could go to Michael Haneke (Amour),  David O. Russell (Silver Linings Playbook), or Steven Spielberg (Lincoln).

Best Picture: Argo, with Beasts of the Southern Wild or Lincoln the other possibilities.
