James Murdoch out at BSkyB
James Murdoch has stepped down as chairman of British Sky Broadcasting. Murdoch had been a key figure in the phone hacking scandal that brought down the company’s tabloid News of the World. Journalism professor Elizabeth Mehren, a former reporter with the Los Angeles Times, offers the following comment:
“James Murdoch is the obvious fall guy here, but he may also be the right one, since it is clear that his father intends to retain control of his empire no matter what the cost to others.
“Still, purging News Corp. of Murdoch family members will not make the phone hacking scandal go away.”
