Campaign 2012: GOP nomination is Romney’s to lose

March 21st, 2012

Mitt Romney was the big winner in the Illinois primary. The question now is when will Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich  get out of the race. Graham Wilson, an expert in American politics, is chair of BU’s Political Science department. He offers the following comment on the GOP nomination:

“Neither Santorum or, even less, Gingrich has a chance of winning the nomination. The fact is that neither Santorum nor Gingrich are significant people; both are political failures whose presence in the race is testimony to the weakness of the field.

“One problem for the Republicans in getting them out of the contest is that within a few days everyone will have forgotten that Santorum and Gingrich exist. At least Perry could go back to being governor of Texas; for these guys, leaving the contest means stepping into the political void.”
