With the end of 2011 just a few days away, Professor Voices asked several of our experts to tell us what they thought were the top stories of 2011. We’ll be posting more lists over the next few days.

The following is my Top 10 List of Business Finance Stories of 2011

1. Euro sovereign debt crisis, bailout of Greek and Portugal & Ireland, and fear of a Euro disintegration

2. S&P’s downgrade of U.S.’s top credit rating, mounting deficit of  $15 trillion (and growing)

3. Washington, DC political gridlock and failure to achieve meaningful deficit reduction

4. Stubborn global recession, high unemployment, growing protectionism and anti-Keynesian movement

5. Fear of U.S. muni-bond defaults – that never materialized – yet bonds in 2011 produced top returns

6. Occupy Wall Street Movement and speed in which it spread globally

7. Death of Steve Jobs – loss of a modern day Thomas Edison

8. Bankruptcy of MF Global, the largest since 2008 Lehman Brothers collapse

9. Pummeling of Latin American, European Union BRIC and other Asian equity markets

10. Weak corporate governance & poor risk management controls, e.g., Olympus and UBS trading losses
