Campaign 2012: Newt leads in Iowa
Newt Gingrich continues to surge in polls leading up to the Iowa caucus. A Washington Post/ABC News poll and the Des Moines Register Iowa Poll show him leading 33% and 25%, respectively. College of Communication professor Tobe Berkovitz, an authority on political communications and advertising, offers the following comment:
“The old adage in politics, ‘Better lucky than good,’ applied to the rise of Newt Gingrich but the more appropriate adage now is the saying, ‘Timing is everything.’ And Newt has the timing.
“With the Iowa caucuses barreling down the tracks and the holiday season in full swing, voter attention isn’t focused on the campaign. This helps Newt since, even as the media begins the full hammering on him, the voters are more concerned with the best deal on a 900-inch HDTV.
“The 2012 Republican campaign has been driven by debates, reducing the importance of on-the-ground campaigning and building an Iowa field operation. This also strengthens Newt’s hand.”
