Born in Harlem in 1919, Roy DeCarava is an icon of American photography. He was first recognized for his body of work capturing everyday life in Harlem beginning in the 1940s and later for his images of the New York jazz scene. The latter of which were published in the monograph The Sound I Saw: Improvisation on a Jazz Theme by Phaidon Press in 2001. DeCarava was the first African American photographer to receive a John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship (1952), and studied at the Cooper Union Institute, the Harlem Art Center, and George Washington Carver Art School. DeCarava is currently a distinguished professor of art at Hunter College, where he began teaching in 1975. He was awarded the National Medal of Arts in 2006.
