Born in the Bronx in 1921, Dr. Jules Aarons was an atmospheric physicist and an active photographer from 1946 until 1976. He began photographing his family and the urban communities of Boston's West End and North Ends. Traveling throughout the world, he continued to photograph people in their everyday surroundings. The six books, dozens of exhibitions here and abroad, and work in many major international collections belies his important career as a BU professor. His series of exhibitions and books from the Boston Public Library and French Library as well as the retrospective book Street Portraits, 1946-1976 and subsequent 2002 exhibition at DeCordova Museum and Sculpture Park reintroduced his caring and deeply felt images. In past years he has had exhibitions in Paris, Boston, and the Hotchkiss School and released a new book, Public Spaces, Private Moments. This is one of his quintessential images, shown at the French Library exhibition in 2002, and is a vintage print.
