An electrical engineer at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Harold “Doc” Edgerton (1903 – 1990) was a pioneer in the use of high speed electronic flash in the 1940s and a devoted scientist and educator. His most well known images include those of a bullet passing through an apple and milk droplets. The exposure was effected by the EG&G MicroFlash; designed by Edgerton, it was an air-spark unit with incredibly short duration and very similar to the earliest 1850s "flash" equipment. Edgerton's photographs aesthetically and philosophically transcend their subjects and are now held by museums worldwide.
