Born in Wichita Falls, TX, Gohlke received his BA from the University of Texas at Austin in English Literature and later attended Yale University for his MA in English. At Yale, Gohlke met Walker Evans and later studied with Paul Caponigro. Gohlke's work was a part of the influential group exhibition, New Topographics: Images of a Man-Altered Landscape, shown at the George Eastman House in 1975. Represented in numerous private and public collections, he is the recipient of two Guggenheim and two NEA Fellowships. A book of his photographs of American grain elevators, Measure of Emptiness, was published in 1992. His Mount St. Helens work was the subject of a solo show at the Museum of Modern Art in 2005 and included a catalogue, Mount St. Helens: Photographs by Frank Gohlke. A retrospective of his work, organized by the Amon Carter Museum, traveled to the Addison Gallery of American Art in 2008, followed by stops at the Center for Creative Photography and the Smithsonian. It was accompanied by a catalogue, Accommodating Nature, published by the Center for American Places. A teacher at various regional colleges and lecturer for the PRC, Gohlke recently accepted positions as a professor of photography at the University of Arizona and Senior Research Fellow at the Center for Creative Photography.
