Born in Washington state, Eirik Johnson is currently an Assistant Professor at Massachusetts College of Art and Design. Johnson holds a BFA in photography and BA in history from the University of Washington and earned his MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute in 2003. He has exhibited at venues such as the Museum of Contemporary Photography, the George Eastman House, and the Aperture Foundation. He has received several awards for his work, including the Santa Fe Prize in 2005 and a Fulbright Grant to Peru in 1999-2000. This image is featured in his first monograph, Borderlands, published by Twin Palms Publishers in 2005. In Borderlands, which photo-eye booklist declared one of the best photo books of 2005, Johnson explores uninhabited spaces at the edge of society. Johnson was named one of PDN magazine's "30 Emerging Photographers to Watch" in 2006. He is currently working on his next book on the Pacific Northwest.
