In addition to being an accomplished image-maker, Bruce Cratsley (1944–1998) also advanced photography through his work at many photo-based organizations. He began his career at the renowned Magnum Photo Agency acting as administrative assistant to the director of the Magnum archive. After a stint working with the Lee Witkin Gallery, Cratsley became the director of Photograph Gallery, New York, and then went on to become the director of Graphics and Photography at Marlborough Gallery, New York. His personal work was influenced by his studies with Lisette Model, Marvin Hoshino, and Ben Fernandez. Cratsley's black and white images are characterized by a mysterious and poetic quality.
