Latvia-born Halsman became known for his brilliant photographic portraits while in France during the 1930s. After moving to the US in 1940 due to WWII, he gained widespread acclaim for his work, particularly for his Life magazine covers. Among his most well known subjects were Salvador Dali, Albert Einstein and Marilyn Monroe.
