emily kahn

Emily Kahn is a Harvard and School of the Museum of Fine Arts graduate whose work emphasizes the dynamic relationships and interactions among families. Her photographs have been included in exhibitions at such institutions as the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and Brandeis’s Rose Art Museum, and have been published in such publications as DoubleTake and Art New England. Kahn is on the Photographic Resource Center’s Board of Directors.

An American Family, Series III represents an ongoing series of work that derives from a group of long-neglected photographs by Kahn’s late father—a dedicated scientist and writer. After being asked by her father to complete his unfinished autobiography, Kahn began examining his life through these photographs. However, through the process of discovering and recontextualizing the photographs, she realized that she was formulating her own autobiography as well.

An American Family, Series III moves beyond a simple family story and personal narrative. Its ability to tap into the viewer’s soul to elicit “other” personal stories is the greater value of bringing this series to light. It is truly about memory, emotion, and the exploration of the human condition.
