Abelardo Morell was born in Havana in 1948 and immigrated to the United States with his parents in 1962. He earned his undergraduate degree from Bowdoin College and MFA from Yale University School of Art. He has many photographic series including Camera Obscura and Books. To illustrate Lewis Carroll’s tale for Alice in Wonderland, Morell used books themselves as the architecture and landscape in the photographs. According to the artist: “Because books belong to both physical and imaginary worlds, I thought that they might serve Lewis Carroll’s tale well.”

Morell’s work has been featured in many solo exhibitions around in the world, including at the Museum of Modern Art (New York City), Art Institute of Chicago (IL), and Carroussel de Louvre (Paris, France). In addition, his work is in permanent collections at the Museum of Modern Art (New York City), Gallerie degli Uffizi (Florence, Italy), and San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (CA) to name a few.

He has received a number of awards and grants including a Cintas grant, Guggenheim fellowship, Rappaport Prize, and an Alturas Foundation grant. In addition, he was the recipient of the International Center of Photography 2011 Infinity Award for Art. Morell has published a number of books, including A Camera in a Room, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, A Book of Books, and Camera Obscura. Additionally, he was featured in Allie Humenuk’s film Shadow of the House, a documentary about Morell’s experience as an artist.
