12. Paul Ickovic

Chamber Maid, Prague, 1990
Gelatin Silver Print
Signed Verso, 13 x 19 in.
Courtesy of Robert Gardner & the artist

Born in 1944 in Czechoslovakia, Ickovic is often characterized as working in the tradition of European photographers Brassaï and Henri Cartier-Bresson. Ickovic does not stage, crop, or manipulate his photographs. Rather he captures the “decisive moment,” like Cartier-Bresson, and takes the photograph on the spot. Maintaining what he calls a “critical distance” from his subjects, Ickovic is close enough to be noticed yet possesses the eye of a voyeur.

His work has been featured in many solo exhibitions, including at the Robert Klein Gallery (Boston, MA) and International Center for Photography (New York City). In addition, he has work in several permanent collections including the Museum of Modern Art and International Center for Photography(both New York City), Minneapolis Institute of Arts (MN), and the National Gallery (Prague, Czech Republic).

Ickovic has published a number of books, including Kafka’s Grave & Other Stories, In Transit, and Safe Conduct.

He is represented by the Robert Klein Gallery in Boston.
