Safety Tips

  1. Never leave your laptop computer unattended in any public location (i.e. G.S.U., The Library, study lounges, public benches, etc.) or in a locker.
  2. Always lock offices or dorm rooms where the laptop is left.
  3. If possible use a security device such as steel cable locks security plates or alarms to secure your laptop computer. University Computers sells a number of security devices and they can be viewed here. Also the laptop manufacturer may recommend and sell security devices on their own website.
  4. Always contact the police in the event of a theft.
  5. Keep a copy of the serial number in a safe place that is easily accessible in the event of a theft.
  6. Homeowners insurance may cover the loss of your laptop outside the home (contact your agent or insurance company for more information). People living in apartments should consider getting renters insurance.
  7. Register your laptop through our Laptop registration program.

It is not guaranteed that these prevention techniques will prevent the theft of a laptop computer. However, using a combination of these techniques will significantly reduce your risk of being a victim of theft.
