A review of laptop thefts
that occurred on the Charles River Campus from September 1st, 2003
to September 1st, 2004. Only theft reports of laptops were used
and only theft reports from the Charles River Campus were used.
Victims lost approximately $78,258.00 in laptop thefts for
the school year or about $1740.00 per laptop. There were
an average of 4 thefts per month. 44% of the thefts
occurred in BU Dormitories. Only 10% of the thefts
were cleared, four cases by arrest and one case was cleared via
other means. Of the 50 thefts, only 28% of the laptops were
secured in the room or office, via locked door or other security
device. Of the four reported thefts that occurred at the library,
all four laptops that were stolen were left unsecured or the victim
left the area for a period of time.

Tips
- Never
leave your laptop computer unattended in any public location (i.e.
G.S.U., The Library, study lounges, public benches, etc.) or in
a locker.
- Always lock offices
or dorm rooms where the laptop is left.
- If possible use a
security device such as steel cable locks security plates or alarms
to secure your laptop computer. University
Computers sells a number of security devices and they can
be viewed here.
Also the laptop manufacturer may recommend and sell security devices
on their own website.
- Always contact
the police in the event of a theft.
- Keep a copy of the
serial number in a safe place that is easily accessible in the
event of a theft.
- Homeowners insurance
may cover the loss of your laptop outside the home (contact
your agent or insurance company for more information). People
living in apartments should consider getting renters insurance.
- Register
your laptop through our Laptop registration program.
It is not guaranteed
that these prevention techniques will prevent the theft of a laptop
computer. However, using a combination of these techniques will
significantly reduce your risk of being a victim of theft.
