Description

Serious physical illness causes suffering and disruption to one’s life story. For social workers, the impact of illness can affect the therapeutic process and alter clients’ experiences. This one day workshop will focus on considering “How do I take care of myself and still take care of others?” Research has found that this is an essential social work skill that most do not think about until they are in midst of a medical crisis. Using lecture, case presentation, and group exercises we will examine the illness experience, potential changes in use of self and the ethical dilemmas pertaining to self -disclosure, interruption of services, conflicts of interests, and potential boundary crossings as well as continuing to work under conditions that meet the criteria for professional impairment.
